İsmail Kartal said winning a derby is not a requirement for becoming league champion. “You can become champion in this league without winning a derby. We could do it this year, too,” Kartal said.
His remarks came after Galatasaray defeated Fenerbahçe 2-1 in the derby. Addressing the relationship between derby victories and the league title, Kartal said a team can finish the season as champion even if it does not win its derby matches.
With the words “We could do it this year, too,” Kartal said his own team could also win the championship this season. His comments framed the league title as a possibility for his side despite the derby defeat.
