President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said there would be no tolerance for people who make large gains in a short time through market manipulation. He contrasted them with traders and shopkeepers who, in his words, work with great care to earn their livelihoods lawfully.
Erdoğan cited turning 3 lira into 10, 20 or 30 lira in just three to five months through market manipulation as an example. His remarks distinguished those making excessive gains in this way from business owners seeking to earn an honest income.
“While my trader and shopkeeper brothers and sisters go to great lengths to earn lawfully, we will never tolerate those who use market manipulation to multiply their 3 lira to 10, 20 or 30 in just three to five months; we will certainly make them pay the price for the excessive gains they have made,” Erdoğan said. He said those gains would not go without a price and that the people responsible would have to pay for them.
